The suspended sign, written in Jonathan's own hand, says "Feel free to play." Somehow, I never forgot this sculpture which I first experienced during his 1984 survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art. One could say that this work opened my eyes to a new approach to art that led to this convivial exhibition 15 years later.
